LymeX® Installation Recommendations
- Most important to the success of LymeX® is to grow a LymeX® Lawn free of all other grasses and weeds. The larger the area, the more effective LymeX® lawns will be. Choose your timing for installation to take optimum advantage of seasonal conditions. Consult your local universtity agricultural extension agent or lawn seeding contractor to identify optimum seeding timing.
- Kill all existing vegetation prior to seeding using methods such as non-residual herbicides (following manufacturers recommendations), smothering, scraping off existing ground cover, etc. Tilling should be avoided if possible as it kicks up weed seeds. If tilling is unavoidable, till, rake and then kill any regrowth prior to seeding LymeX®. If herbiciding, do so when vegetation is green to ensure uptake.
- Mow down all dead thatch, remove any clumps, and seed into soil using any method that ensures good seed to soil contact, seeding into the soil an eighth to a quarter inch deep at a rate of 10 lbs per 1000 square feet area. Criss cross back and forth to ensure good seed distribution. Tamp seed down by walking over or rolling the area.
- Apply either a starter fertilizer, for example 10-20-20 or equivalent at a very low rate (5 lbs per 1000 sq ft), or none at all if soil is fertile. Fertilizers initiate weed growth so use sparingly.
- Mulch lightly with an organic weed and seed free mulch. Do not use hay, unless salt hay, as hay contains too many weed seeds.
- Water daily for 10-20 minutes for four to six weeks depending upon your climate and time of year.
- Consider mowing if you want a golf course fairway look. Remember, the less mowing the better. We advise against ever mowing lower than 4 inches from ground.
- Consider dethatching at reasonable intervals to enhance the look of LymeX®. This isn’t a necessary effort however offers better presentation.
